New York Senate honors Bangladeshi community with resolutions for New Year and Independence Day

The New York State Senate convened on April 28, 2025, to honor the vibrant contributions of the Bangladeshi community through the adoption of two significant resolutions. The first resolution, introduced by Senator Luis Sepulveda, proclaims April 14 as Bangla New Year Day in New York State, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Bangladeshi people. This day, known as Bohaila Boisak, symbolizes renewal and community bonding, and is marked by festivities that showcase Bengali music, art, and cuisine.

Senator Sepulveda expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Bangladeshi community, highlighting their resilience and the invaluable role they play in enriching New York’s cultural diversity. He emphasized that the celebration is not merely about marking a new calendar year but also about honoring centuries of history and the spirit of the Bengali identity. The second resolution, also championed by Senator Sepulveda, recognizes March 26 as Bangladesh Independence Day in New York. This date commemorates the struggle for independence that began in 1971, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. Senator Julia Ramos, who represents a district with a significant Bangladeshi population, spoke passionately about the community’s strength and contributions, noting their commitment to entrepreneurship and community service.

Throughout the session, various senators shared their personal connections to the Bangladeshi community, reflecting on the cultural and economic impact they have in neighborhoods across New York. Senator Comrie and Senator Bailey both acknowledged the importance of Bangladeshi-owned businesses in their districts, while Senator Myrie celebrated the community’s dedication to building a better future for all.

The resolutions received unanimous support from the Senate, underscoring a collective commitment to recognizing and celebrating the diversity that strengthens New York State. As the session concluded, the senators welcomed their Bangladeshi guests, extending courtesies and privileges of the Senate, and reinforcing the message of unity and respect for all cultures within the state.
