National Election Should Be Held by December: Army Chief

Dhaka 21 May – Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has stated that the national election should be held by December this year. Speaking on the issue of elections, he reaffirmed his previous stance, emphasizing that the right to determine the country’s future lies with an elected government.

He made these remarks on Wednesday during an Officers’ Address held at the Army Parade Ground in Dhaka Cantonment. Officers from various ranks of the Bangladesh Army, both physically present and virtually connected, attended the event. Discussions during the program touched on elections, regional corridors, ports, reforms, and other contemporary issues, according to several officers present.

Corridor Issue

Regarding the issue of a humanitarian corridor in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, the Army Chief commented that any decision on this matter must come from an elected government and follow a legitimate process. He emphasized the need to safeguard national interests and ensure that any step taken must be based on political consensus.

Message Against Mob Violence

General Waker-Uz-Zaman also issued a strong warning against mob violence. He said the army would adopt a firmer stance regarding law and order and that disorder or violence under the guise of mass gatherings would no longer be tolerated.

Port Management Controversy

Addressing the recent debate over the operation of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chattogram Port by foreign entities, the Army Chief said that opinions from local communities and political leaders are essential. Such decisions, he noted, should be made by a political government.

On Reforms

When asked about ongoing reforms, General Waker-Uz-Zaman stated that he has no knowledge of what reforms are being undertaken or how they are being implemented, as he was not consulted or informed on the matter.

Support for Peaceful Eid Celebrations

With Eid-ul-Azha approaching, the Army Chief urged everyone to ensure that people can celebrate the festival in a safe and festive environment. In his address, he also reiterated that the Bangladesh Army will never engage in any activities that would harm the country’s sovereignty. He instructed army personnel at all levels to remain neutral and to carry out any future election duties with integrity and dedication.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman concluded by thanking all members for fulfilling their duties amid a changing situation. He added, “We are cooperating with the interim government and will continue to do so.”
